Traveling with a Baby: Nervous System Regulation, Brain Retraining & Navigating the Skies
By Lindsay Mitchell
As a nervous system regulation and brain retraining practitioner, I spend my days helping people understand how their bodies and brains respond to stress, unpredictability, and overstimulation.
And then I boarded a plane with my baby.
There’s nothing quite like being 30,000 feet in the air, holding a crying child, and realizing your ability to co-regulate is the only thing standing between collective meltdown and collective grace.
This post isn’t just a how-to on flying with a baby. It’s a real-time reflection on nervous system resilience — what happens when routines are disrupted, support systems are far away, and you’re relying on presence over perfection.
I’m a full-time breastfeeding, contact-napping, co-sleeping mama to a baby boy who’s been a dream traveler — mostly. But we had one flight that tested every nervous system regulation tool I teach.
Let’s talk about it.
🧠 How to Regulate Your Nervous System Before Traveling with a Baby
One of the foundations of nervous system retraining is this: regulation starts before the stressful moment. It’s what we do in the in-between that builds true resilience and capacity.
Here’s what supported me before travel:
-
Visualizing the day ahead — not to control it, but to orient my nervous system to transitions like early wakeups, airport lines, baby-wearing through TSA, and in-flight nursing.
-
Meeting my own basic needs — hydration, nourishing food, and gentle movement helped me feel grounded and responsive, not reactive.
-
Reframing expectations — babies aren’t problems to solve; they’re co-regulators in small bodies doing their best in unfamiliar environments.
✅ Brain retraining tip: Visualization and expectation management are powerful tools for rewiring your response to stress. Learn more about nervous system regulation in this post.
🧳 Nervous System-Aware Packing for Parents
Yes, I packed diapers, wipes, clothes, a carrier, and snacks.
But I also packed for nervous system regulation and sensory anchoring:
-
-
An essential oil roller associated with calm.
-
A grounding playlist in my earbuds.
-
A protein bar and a calming affirmation on a sticky note in my wallet.
For me:
-
✅ Regulation reminder: Comfort objects, soothing sounds, and sensory tools are core elements of both adult and infant nervous system regulation.
✈️ In-Flight Nervous System Challenges: Crying Baby, Calm Parent
On one flight, my son cried nearly the entire time. He was overtired, overstimulated, and couldn’t settle. Nothing I tried “worked.”
Here’s what I did instead:
-
Acknowledged my own stress. I silently told myself: This is hard. I feel exposed. I’m doing my best.
-
Grounded through my body. Feet on the floor, belly breathing, shoulders soft, long exhales.
-
Softened my gaze. I looked at him with compassion — even if I had to fake it at first.
-
Reminded myself: I am the anchor. My baby doesn’t need perfection — he needs presence.
And yes — people stared. Others smiled. One woman whispered, “You’re superwoman” I let that in.
I also remembered ALL the other flights I have been where he has been a dream -- including a 9 hour red eye and 10 hour delay in an airport. It brought me out of my limbic response and into rational thinking, my prefrontal cortex. Babies have moods just like all of us.
💤 Baby Sleep, Routine Disruptions & Nervous System Flexibility
Because we co-sleep and contact nap, I knew travel would impact our rhythms. I didn’t expect miracles — no stroller naps or hotel crib magic.
Instead, I leaned into flexibility:
-
Connection over routine. Sometimes that meant contact naps in a dark hotel room. Sometimes, holding him while he cried.
-
Presence over perfection. Regulation isn’t about control. It’s about moving through stress, not avoiding it.
-
One anchoring ritual per day. Whether it was bath time, lullabies, or nursing — we created a sense of “home” amidst unfamiliarity.
✅ Brain retraining insight: Flexibility and attunement build stronger neural pathways than rigid routine ever could.
❤️ Nervous System Lessons from Flying with a Baby
Traveling with a baby is a masterclass in nervous system flexibility and co-regulation.
You will be stretched — but not broken.
You will feel big feelings — and so will your baby.
And through it all, you’ll discover that resilience lives in connection, not control.
That’s what I’m taking away from our travels: not just memories, but the embodied knowing that I can regulate — in flight, and in life.
✨ Final Takeaways for Brain Retraining & Nervous System Resilience
If you’re a parent, a practitioner, or someone walking through life’s turbulence — here’s what I want you to know:
-
Regulation is not about avoiding stress. It’s about building capacity to meet it.
-
Co-regulation is powerful. Your calm can shape your baby’s brain — and yours.
-
Brain retraining starts in the body. Breathing, grounding, softening — these are neural rewiring tools in action.
